Start knitting in pattern, starting with C (MC) and D (CC)

Pattern:
Rnd 1: Knit across with MC
Rnd 2: sl 1, k1 (with CC) repeat for one round
Rnd 3: Knit across with MC
Rnd 4: k1 (with CC), sl 1, repeat for one round

Repeat pattern using the following color order:

MC: D; CC: A
MC: A; CC: B
MC: B; CC: C
MC: C; CC: D
MC: D; CC: A

Repeat the 4 knitting pattern rounds in the appropriate colors until your ankle is sufficiently long. End with A as MC.

Divide for the heel: 18 stitches on a holder for the instep and 18 stitches for the heel flap.

Heel Flap:

row 1 (ws): with A: purl all stitches
row 2: with A: knit all stitches
row 3: with B: sl1, p1
row 4: with B: knit all stitches
Repeat these 4 rows 4 times total (16 rows)
Turn Heel (all with A)
row 17: knit
row 18: sl1, p12, p2tog, turn
row 19: sl1, k6, sl1, k1, psso (skp), turn
row 20: sl1, p6, p2tog, turn
Repeat rows 19 and 20 until only 8 stitches are left on needle.
Knit across 8 stitches.
With A, pickup 11 stitches on heel flap
With A, knit across 18 stitches on holder
With A, pickup 11 stitches on heel flap
With A, knit first 4 stitches on heel needle

Arrange stitches on the needles as follows:
Needle 1: bottom of foot (15 stitches)
Needle 2: instep (9 stitches)
Needle 3: instep (9 stitches)
Needle 4: bottom of foot (15 stitches)

Continue with slip-stitch pattern on needles 2 and 3. Only do straight knitting on needles 1 and 4 (i.e. do not slip stitches)
The foot decreases will happen on needles 1 and 4.
Rnd 1:
Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches on needle, k2tog, k1
Needles 2&3: continue in slip-stitch pattern as on ankle
Needle 4: k1, skp, knit to end of needle
Rnd 2:
Needles 1&4: knit plain
Needles 2&3: continue in slip-stitch pattern as on ankle

Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 36 stitches total (9 on each needle)

Continue to knit round 2 (following the slip-stitch pattern) until the sock is about 2 inches shorter then your final desired length.

Toe Decrease:

While still following the color pattern:
Rnd 1: on each needle: knit until last 2 stitches, k2tog
Rnd 2: on each needle: knit even

Continue these 2 rounds until 8 stitches remain.
Using a yarn needle, pass the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Notes:

Because of the slip stitch pattern, the sock tends to be tighter and less stretchy then a normal sock (i.e. one knit in stockinette.) This is also the cause for the bottom of the foot to turn upwards.
